Banana Test

For this test, I wanted to see the effect of having a single banana had on my keytone and glucose levels. Before this test, I had not eaten a banana for at least 6 months, possibly longer. I can’t remember the last time I had a banana. Before I went on the Keto diet, I typically eat at least 1 banana a day, usually just after waking up.

Before the test, my Boz Ratio was a bit high, due to eating Halloween candy bar the day before. It took my body almost 24hrs to fully empty out the glucose from the candy bar. I wanted to start the test with my Boz Ratio below 80.

The banana was a single medium sized banana:

Conclusion

Comparing the effect of a single banana to Halloween candy bars (see the Halloween candy bar test) I had started the Halloween test in a much better state, and the effects of the candy bars was much more severe than the single Banana. While the effects on my blood levels were not as dramatic as the candy bar test, it is still interesting to see that my glucose levels did shoot up significantly, and it did take my body at least 2 hours to process the glucose and get down to a Box Ratio of less than 80.

There were also some physical effects that I did not anticipate:

  • Soon after eating the banana, I noticed the sugar rush to my head.
  • After waiting for the 2 hrs to do the test, I noticed cramps and hunger sensations. I was more hungry than usual. I wanted to eat something.
  • That evening, I also experienced indigestion problems, feeling nauseous, visiting the bathroom frequently, something I had never experienced before after eating a banana. Maybe it was the fiber in the banana?

  • So, does a banana affect blood glucose levels? Absolutely.
  • Does a banana affect insulin levels? Absolutely.  When insulin goes up, keytones go down.
  • Will I eat banana’s again? For the most part, I will try to avoid bananas as much as possible.
